Room confusion

[edit]

I am confused. From the White House article I learn that the Presidential Emergency Operations Center lies under the East Wing while from this article I learn it is under the West Wing. Maybe they are really two different rooms but seen the functions described it sounds too me to be the same thing.

Could somebody clarify this please. Vanderesch 14:38, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You are correct. The PEOC is beneath the East Wing, and the Situation room is beneath the West Wing. Schuminweb 05:38, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Right. The Situation Room is sort of the president's switchboard and conference room. The staff monitors secure lines of communication with foreign and intelligence offices and sets up complicated overseas calls and teleconference calls. It is not a bomb shelter, however. The PEOC is where the president (and his family and immediate senior staff) would go if the White House were under attack. It has external communications, but you'd probably be talking to NORAD, not to Baghdad. --Tysto 19:34, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rank of staff duty officers

[edit]

According to [1] this 1997 article, staff duty officers in the sit room are relatively junior. Is this still the case, or has it changed due to 9/11 or the room's renovation? --VAcharon 19:41, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

President Ronald Reagan discussing Libya in the White House Situation Room.

All the photos in this article are of the George W. Bush Presidency. Maybe there could be some more variety, such as the photo at right from the Reagan Presidency. It would give readers a more historical timeline of the room. Happyme22 17:30, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great Obama photo

When someone gets a chance: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/3485563573/ --Padraic 18:31, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhat pointless. The White House staff photographers are constantly churning out a stream of pictures on Flickr.com. Which one is the "best"? The article already has a number of representative images that show the reader the appearance of the room. —QuicksilverT @ 17:13, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

– Simply "Situation Room" appears to be more common than "White House Situation Room". This is somewhat tricky to parse, as searches for the former also return results for the latter, though "Situation Room" returns several times the hits of "White House Situation Room" on Google Books ([2] vs. [3]) Either way, this is the clear-cut WP:PRIMARYTOPIC of the term. There are only two other uses, Situation Room (photograph), a picture of the Situation Room, and the news show The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. The White House room gets over 60.8% of the page views, which is surely a low count considering that Situation Room (photograph) was inexplicably located at the base name Situation Room until a few days ago, and thus almost certainly got a lot of mis-clicks intending the actual Situation Room.[4] Cúchullain t/c 16:42, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Whether individual editors hear the term or not isn't the point. It may be a "generic" term in some contexts, but none that matter on Wikipedia, as there are only 3 uses, and this one is the primary topic. Going through several pages of Google Books results, I found only a few references to anything else.[5]--Cúchullain t/c 17:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I was answering the previous poster who suggested I thought the term was generic because I'd heard it a lot in the media! I still maintain that there is nothing wrong with the current title, as I believe that would be its common name in normal speech. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:27, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't see the evidence for that, but even if it stays, Situation Room should redirect here as a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT.--Cúchullain t/c 14:17, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - As long as there are no other challenging topics using the exact name, the White House one is the most recognizable out of Situation Rooms. The proposed title is not ambiguous when referring to the White House room. The distinctive topics are The Situation Room, the CNN talk show, and Situation Room (photograph), a photo taken within the White House. The statistics before the disambiguation on the photo reveals that readers would go to the article the most. George Ho (talk) 00:24, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Too generic. To me, a situation room is an incident command center, regardless of the location. The current dabpage works best, unless "Situation room" was separated from "Situation Room" with the former being a dabpage and the latter redirecting to this article. — Train2104 (t • c) 06:03, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And now we need to mention the legality of recording devices

... and their use. Is it just about "honour" or is it more? Does it depend on what the room is being used for, etc, etc. 85.211.228.45 (talk) 08:19, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
