Rand McNally closed their main facility. Do not know if anything remains in Skokie Klein tool also closed, believe Bell and Howell gone — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.136.29.223 (talk) 05:03, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ZIP Code 60203

[edit]

The 60203 Zip code is served by the Evanston Post office, but is entirely within skokie proper. I live in 60203 so I know what I'm talking about. If you search for 60203 on mapquest etc. It will appear as Evanston, but it is in skokie. Only our postal service comes from evanston. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.207.77.56 (talkcontribs) 17:21, 25 October 2006

Schools

[edit]

We have some great schools here in Skokie, does anyone else feel they should be expanded on? Obstructio 03:53, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So many schools in District 65 ([1]), i'm not really sure which have students in skokie, any who know willing to put them in (and hopefully write brief articles about the schools?) -- jj1108888 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jj110888 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 5 March 2005

Source of the name "Skokie"

[edit]

It's likely that the source of the name "Skokie" was Skoki, Poland, which was home to a Jewish community prior to WWII. I'd like to find an external reference or indication of this. The history section of the city's offical website ([2]) says nothing in regard to why the name "Skokie" was chosen. Rmisiak 06:44, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good guess, but the relation to the Polish town is purely coincidence. The origin of the word Skokie is from the Potawatomi Indian word for "big swamp", as most of Skokie used to be submerged in a murky swamp. I plan on adding a lot to this article in the near future as I've lived in Skokie my entire life. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 07:32, May 2, 2005 (UTC)
Can we remove this line: 'Another theory is that the name of Skokie originated from a word in the Potawatomi language meaning "Big Swamp".'? A couple paragraphs above it, there is another Potawatomi translation given as "Great Marsh". I don't see the difference...Montblanc2000 00:56, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In response to ILike2BeAnonymous' comment on his edit: "I'm assuming the quote ends here, since you edited it; no need for synonym for name, and no caps as it isn't a proper name." I only moved the alternative, synonymous translation to accommodate the author who thought it necessary to include it, but I tried to do so in a more concise, streamlined way. Since "great marsh" is in lowercase, I agree that it would be inconsistent to have "Big Swamp" capitalized; moreover, it seems logical to have the translation of the word itself be lowercase. However, given the fact that it is a translation of a place name, it should by all rights be capitalized as it is therefore a proper noun. Nevertheless, since this is a minor issue and still technically correct as is, there is no need to pursue the matter any further unless someone feels strongly about the issue.Montblanc2000 23:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The only problem being, is that quote correct? In the version I edited, it was impossible to tell exactly where the quote ended, going by the way it was punctuated. I took my best guess. Do you know for sure that the quote is accurate? That is important here. +ILike2BeAnonymous 04:16, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I too live in Skokie. I remeber reading in a publication put out by the village that they were going to vote on a new name. Ridgeview and Oakton seemed like likely winners. then the name of Cicero Ave was changed to Skokie Blvd, and "Skokie" won the vote. I don't remeber where I saw this. Eliezerke 23:40, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Skokie had almost no Jewish population until the 1950's, and the name Skokie was adopted before then, so it's extremely unlikely that it was named after the Jewish community in Poland —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.152.199.3 (talkcontribs) 16:01, 22 September 2006

Skokie and Posen were founded by Polish immigrants (mostly farmers) from northern Greatpoland (Wielkopolska) after the liquidation of serfdom in 1848, and must be older than 1890 and 1920 (founded between 1849 and 1890). Just because someone does not know about it and make the most basic linguistic analysis, it does not mean that is true. If you don't know what I wrote, see here: http://www.distancescalculator.com Skokie, Illinois - Posen, Illinois and Skoki Poland - Poznań Poland ; even distance is similar. Germans and Jews are not important in this case. Names are written in German, not Polish, because racist Americans (that time ruled Pan-Germanism, Aryan race etc.) not accepted them; and like I see in your MM and books, not much changed (for Poles). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.23.190.189 (talk) 09:56, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Considering Chicago is the largest group of people with Polish heritage outside of Poland, I also think there may be more to the Skokie:Skoki connection than is being admitted here. 83.20.76.200 (talk) 13:34, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

World's Largest Village

[edit]

For a long time, I remeber hearing that Skokie was the world's largest village, then I heard that Schamburg beat us. Does anyone have any hard facts concerning this? Eliezerke 23:40, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Added to the article, but note, this is no longer considered true, if indeed it ever was. HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:13, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Holocaust survivor population

[edit]

I've heard it asserted many times that "Skokie has the largest population of Holocaust survivors in the U.S.". Dunno whether that's supposed to mean by percentage or total numbers. (Plus, as the article points out, this may no longer be true even if it once was.) Anyone else have any certain knowledge of this? --ILike2BeAnonymous 08:29, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At one time, it probably had amongst the highest percentages of Holocaust survivors of any municipality in the U.S., although I would guess there were municipalities in New York and New Jersey which would have had an equally high percentage, as well as then-unincorporated West Hollywood,West Virgina . In terms of sheer numbers, New York City assuredly had more. With the decline in the Jewish population in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the dying-off of Holocaust survivors (particularly those who were adults at the time of the Shoah) I would think that Skokie no longer has the highest percentage of Holocaust survivors and that somewhere in South Florida probably has that title now. Unfortunately, I don't have statistics to back me up on this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.160.204.146 (talkcontribs) 17:13, 21 June 2006

Famous Skokians

[edit]

There definitely should be a sub tab discussing famous people from Skokie, and notable citizens currently living in Skokie. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.254.153.84 (talkcontribs) 18:23, 18 April 2006

dave lavon is an internet viral video dance star, he is probably more famous in israel, but his videos of him dancing have topped websites all over america. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.206.11.77 (talkcontribs) 16:09, 23 January 2008
Two years later, history has told its tale, and this dude remains unknown and unknowable, along with the mysterious practice of "topping websites".198.53.208.74 (talk) 17:10, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Makes one wish that we could have a two-year "on hold" period during which time persons of supposed "fame" could not have articles created for them. The children who insist on their great fame will have forgotten them by then. HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:15, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"killing coloured people"

[edit]

Is "coloured people" really an encyclopedic term? It sounds like some editor tried to apply reverse psychology. -Lwc (talk) 11:33, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"infamous court case" section

[edit]

Wow. Holy NPOV problems, batman: "the infamous gang of five on the US Supreme Court." But more to the point, isn't the best-known court case in Skokie the one about Nazis marching through town? A10brown (talk) 17:21, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"In 1977 and 1978, Illinois Nazis of the National Socialist Party of America (derived from the American Nazi Party) ..."

"Illinois Nazis" is a term from the BLUES BROTHERS MOVIE. I did not think that a supposedly serious article should refer to the NSPA that way, but some people on Wikipedia who certainly know much less about the subject than I do, disagree. I am not going to fight them. Sometimes I succumb to the impulse to do a good deed by fixing something on Wikipedia, but it doesn't seem to be worth it. Jewish population

[edit]

I have been unable to find an authoritative source for the claim that Skokie was ever majority Jewish. Does anyone have one? Thanks! Avital22 (talk) 18:00, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
