First U.S. POW in Vietnam

[edit]

The line "The U.S. lost two aircraft to anti-aircraft fire, with one pilot killed and another, Ensign Everett Alvarez Jr., becoming the first U.S. Prisoner of War in Vietnam." is incorrect, I believe. Floyd Thompson was the first U.S. POW in Vietnam, captured in March 1964. Please correct me if I'm wrong.--Corbec023 (talk) 16:52, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Floyd Thompson was captured 26 March 1964, according to http://www.pownetwork.org/t1.htm.

Inaccurate Map

[edit]

The map of the targets of Operation Pierce Arrow, and the discussion of those targets in the text, are inaccurate. The Americans were hoping to focus their attacks on torpedo boats, but they were basically attacking any North Vietnamese naval vessels they could find, and the North Vietnamese Navy had a lot more Swatow gunboats than torpedo boats. Furthermore, the torpedo boats were based at Van Hoa, northeast of Hon Gay, close enough to the Chinese border that an attack on it would have been pretty risky.

So none of the places the Americans attacked was a base for torpedo boats, and only one, Loc Chao, happened to have two torpedo boats in its vicinity that the American aircraft attacked.

If someone can locate a map with more accurate labels, that would be desirable. Ed Moise (talk) 16:15, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
