I just came upon this article, previously being unfamiliar with tortell. Here in New Orleans, Louisiana we have a traditional king cake throughout the Carnival season. I always hear that our version came over from France, but this description and photograph are MUCH closer to what we have in New Orleans than any French version I've seen.
