Question

[edit]

Is the Nestene Conciousness one life form - as in the same one each Auton episde - or is it it's own race and each one is different?

Hard to say. It's supposed to be gestalt intelligence - as in, all the parts combine to make up a whole. So in a sense it's just one life form, but in another sense, it's made up of individual parts. Whether the Nestene Consciousness the Doctor meets in Rose is the same one that is sent back to the stars in Terror of the Autons or the same one that is neutralized in Spearhead from Space is not clear.
This is just my own take on it, but I like to think of it like a hive intelligence, and those bits mentioned above simply parts of the same whole - individualistic, but even if you destroy one bit, but as long as there are other bits out there, the Consciousness remains. This is why the Doctor refers to the Nestenes in the plural, even though there seems to be a central intelligence. --khaosworks 19:08, May 25, 2005 (UTC)

Images

[edit]

I think the article is long enough that we could justify having another image or two. Does anybody have good screenshots from Rose of the new series' Autons and/or the Consciousness? (I think that's better than, say, an image of Jon Pertwee wrestling with fake tentacles and bugging his eyes out.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 20:48, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wait...

[edit]

did that last line say for the "2006 series"? we need more elaborate spoiler tags I think--70.107.115.168 16:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it spoils anything, the sequence was a flashback to events from the 2005 series, so there's not really any new plot revealed.

Auton is also the name of a really cool family —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.209.99.140 (talkcontribs) 14:20, February 14, 2007 (UTC)

Gestalt

[edit]

This seems to be incorrect usage of this word, but I cannot think of a better one. Perhaps someone else can?--Kent Witham 06:21, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In science fiction, a gestalt intelligence is a term usually understood to mean a collective intelligence or a hive mind. What we could do is to pipe it to Group mind (science fiction). --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 07:07, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

The article has {{name}} where it could say The Autons.

Also, at the next picture, it should be "A nestene consciousnes. Not "The" as there are more, the doctor has defeated more of them. Robin.lemstra 06:31, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Other uses"

[edit]

Are the references to the term "Auton" used in the Other Uses section even referring to Autons from Doctor Who, or acting as a reference to them? To me, at a glance, they seem like references to unrelated uses of the word "Auton." Unless they're directly referencing Doctor Who's Autons, I feel that the entire section should just be axed.
