All prior content from this talk page is now in /Archive 1. There had been no discussion here since 2004, so none of it was current and there was no reason to keep it here.

We are starting with a clean slate here, in conjunction with today's edits to the article Music genre by User:TimNelson in which the Music genre lists from the are being moved to and re-organized into this article. --Parzival418 Hello 03:36, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't get this...

[edit]

What happened to the whole music thing here? Do you realize that this was probably the only modern music encyclopedia that was worth something, and thanx to who ever "rewrote" these articles, now it's worth nothing... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.252.80.81 (talk) 23:01, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Post-Industrial as its own movement?

[edit]

Hm, as far as I've checked, post-industrial music, in itself, is not nearly as broad of a genre term and as general as one to make it its own movement away from any 'electronic' movement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jotsko (talkcontribs) 03:15, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A website to help clean up these genres

[edit]

I'm working on a website (mashup) that helps people explore different music genres. The content, including the list of genres is all taken from the four music styles lists linked to on this wiki entry. I will be creating links back to wikipedia to encourage cleaning up incorrect content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jezait (talkcontribs) 23:52, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The website has been created and has a temproary location here: http://exploremusic.burnbright.co.nz. It currently only displays content, but doesn't so much encourage contributing and updating it. I would really appreciate any thoughts on this approach to help flesh out the music genre knowledge base.

I'm also thinking of creating a comprehensive music geneology map that connects every possible genre to related genres in a visual format.

Nonsense

[edit]

This classification is mostly worthless and largely fan-driven. There must be some way to separate the important musical traditions from around the world from the minutely-different 'house' styles and vaguely-defined variations of jazz (progressive, free, space, etc.) 24.27.31.170 (talk) 16:00, 9 November 2011 (UTC) Eric[reply]

Potential of list

[edit]

There is an incredible amount of potential that this list has, but as of now it lacks in many areas. While not perfect, List of electronic music genres is an example of a far more uniform and comprehensive list of music genres. It is inconvenient to simply split this list into four different pages, and on those pages, only sort genres alphabetically. This page has the potential to be a comprehensive list of all genres, divided logically by genres with the subgenres listed in a similar fashion to List of electronic music genres. This page, after these revisions, will not only be informative but also enjoyable to read. --71.225.100.72 (talk) 16:42, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly are you proposing to do? Please note there is already a page at List of popular music genres, which may be the sort of thing you are thinking of.--SabreBD (talk) 17:26, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Flamenco Is Not Latin Music

[edit]

Flamenco is Spanish with its roots in gypsy music. How or why it is surreptitiously plonked in the "Latin" section is both lazy and misleading. It has absolutely nothing to do with Italy, Central America or Latin 'whatever'.

If anything, yes it is European but certainly not Latin. Would anyone dare to say Basque music is Latin as well? Wokepedian (talk) 04:19, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Romani should not be confused with 'Roman'. It refers to Romani gypsies (Roma, but certainly not the tomato!) who most likely have their origins in the Indian Subcontinent. Wokepedian (talk) 04:25, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
oh ok, Latino and Hispanic mean the same thing. Crazy English language. Nevertheless flamenco has nothing to do with Latin America. Wokepedian (talk) 05:48, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Style X Genre

[edit]

As far i know, music style is like sentimental ballad, electronic, uptempo, downtempo, etc... While genre is the whole composition of a song. This page provides incorrect information. -GogoLion (talk) 17:31, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

List of music stylesList of music genres and styles – About 80% of the things on the list would probably be described by sources as music genres, and about half of them as musical styles. The line between these terms regarding music is blurred in modern times (see Music genre). Therefore it would be more correct to have such a title for the list. The intro of the article, that has not changed for several years, also indicates that both genres and styles are listed there. Solidest (talk) 09:14, 7 December 2021 (UTC) — Relisting. Megan B.... My thoughts on the differences between the terms after working with many sources, in case anyone has questions about the new title: here. Solidest (talk) 09:25, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support - The extra info is worth the longer title. Primergrey (talk) 05:39, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
