Even though Puerto Ricans may not consider themselves to be in the U.S., they are de facto, as they have U.S. citizenship. However, should Puerto Rico become fully independent, then the list shall be split. WhisperToMe 19:21, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I decided to do a comprimise. The "United States" section is now "United States, including its territories".

I wouldnt say de facto, more like de jure, cause most Puerto Ricans consider ourselves Hispanic, part of the Latin American culture (and most other Latins feel that way about us too) , etc. Id say more De jure because while politically there are papers that say otherwise, culturally, the island is really Latin America. Add to that that mostly all hispanics consider us to be part of Latin America too, and well...this is page to talk aboout the list of statues but I just wanted to point that out.

There should be a list of statues based on height.

DigiBullet 20:42, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Or perhaps include statues from nations older than just a few hundred years? Hmmm?

It seems to be incorrect that the Statue of Liberty is the tallest statue. The Mother Russia statue at Mamayev Kurgan is, from what I can understand, taller both with or without pedestal, but definitely without. 83.109.30.14 01:54, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC) Hm, upon closer investigation, the Buddha of Ushiku, Japan has them both beat. 83.109.30.14 02:07, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

From India: Taj Mahal, Agra and Bibi Ka Maqbara, Aurangabad are definitely not statues. Monuments, yes, but not statues. To me, they are clearly buildings. 85.217.50.138 (talk) 13:55, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And the Qutub Minar is a minar = minaret. That couldn't possibly be a statue! If so, then Washington Monument should be listed, too. 85.217.50.138 (talk) 14:00, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Neglected Countries

[edit]

I'm not an expert on statues but I know that many countries have their own famous sculptures. This list seems to me to be biased in favour of the USA. There are nearly 200 independent nations in the world (the exact figure escapes me), and, whilst I don't know if they all have famous statues, I'm willing to bet most countries do whilst the USA is technically just one country. Granted, it's a very large country, but as a British teenage non-expert doing a homework project, it strikes me as odd that I had heard of the Sphinx, Christ the Redeemer, the Colossus, the Venus de Milo, and so on, and yet most of this page is taken up by American statues I've never heard of. These statues may well be famous in the states - indeed, I'm not going to pretend they're all new even to me - but I'm sure this page should provide information about statues in the countries it currently neglects.

UPDATE: Nobody responded yet, so thought I'd add this apology; there are lots of American statues on the list, but usually just one per state, which seems fair enough. So forgive me, America... it's Canada who's the real culprit! I checked again, and the country that really takes up more than it's fair share of space is Canada. Now if Canada were particularly famous for it's statues, that would be fair enough, but I haven't heard of any of them, whereas I have at least heard of the Statue of Liberty and Lincoln's memorial. My argument remains the same as before: if these statues really are all that famous they sholud remain here, but otherwise, they aren't relevant, as Wikipedia is meant to be unbiased and pages are supposed to do what they say on the tin - that is to say, this is meant to be a list of statues worldwide, not of Canadian statues.

Oh, and by the way, I'm not some stuck up Brit who hates Canada and the USA; I actually have a lot of respect for those countries. I'd just prefer it if all nations were covered. In fact, I should probably add some English statues now, and I hope people a bit more knowlegeable about the subject could provide some for, say, Japan or China.

North Korea

[edit]

North Korea has a lot of very large statues.

It seems to me

[edit]

that this list should only include statues that have articles about them in wikipedia. To try and list every statue in the world is . . . . pointless [opinion], where as having a list that will take the searcher to articles about these statues seems very worthwhile. I agree--Kwame Nkrumah 14:48, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So, a few years later, I am going to go through the list and remove all the red links to nowhere. Most of them probably deserve articles, but until they have an article I say let's keep them off the list. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 04:27, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's listed many statues which don't have an article. In many cases the person who is in question has an article, but that wasn't the point, was it? In that case we have here in Finland at least Paavo Nurmi, CGE Mannerheim and Jari Litmanen. 85.217.50.138 (talk) 13:48, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am starting to remove "statues" if they just link to a person (or something). If there is a specific location and a sculptor listed then I am leaving it on the list. This, as with all things on wikipedia, is open for discussion. EinaR aka Carptrash (talk) 05:08, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thiruvalluvar statue

[edit]

The claim that the statue of Thiruvalluvar near Kanyakumari is the highest placement of any statue on Earth is absolutely false. The statue is placed almost at sea level, not 3,832 meters above it. Check out pictures here: http://www.shunya.net/Pictures/South%20India/Kanyakumari/Kanyakumari.htm. Even if it actually were 3,832 meters above sea level, it would still be placed far lower than the entire town of Wenzhuan in Tibet. It would be hard to accept the idea that Wenzhuan has no statuary of any sort, especially if we accept the definition of "statue" to be broad enough that the 4.5-inch Venus of Willendorf qualifies.

I have touched on this before

[edit]

but now am inclined to remove the links in this list that do not go to an article about the statue, or something very related. There is a Queen Victoria statue listed, in Hong Kong, and when I click on the link I go to an article about a park and there is a picture of the statue, Fair enough. But sometimes the link is to an article about a person, but no mention is made of the statue. Unless I read a pretty good argument as to why those links should remain, I am going to commence with removing them. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 19:36, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hi, i would like to see a list based on sources, for example [1] (lame but open to better). and then build the public art articles on that. however, the public art articles are list by city not state. i did substitute some statue articles for the subject, but am open to your deletions. public art seems to be locally driven rather than top down, like this list. this needs some serious rewriting. Slowking4: 7@1|x 17:48, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your insights. The 100 Greatest Sculptures is interesting in that in, for example, the Greek section it lists some sculptors rather than sculptures, and well as the Capitoline Wolf which has to be a Roman or Etruscan statue and not a Greek one. From my POV this list is just a list of wikipedia articles about particular sculptures. In any case, I rarely delete the work of other editors unless it keeps me up past 2:30 a.m. Which your edits will not do. Carptrash (talk) 22:18, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

well that list is grouped by period, artist, work, city. could copy and drop in a sort table, by city, work, artist, period. it is a little western; recent bias, and some quibbles - estruscans; early romans are greek? and new oldest work not Venus of Willendorf, but Vogelherd cave. this article is showing its age. Slowking4: 7@1|x 14:58, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well I am showing my age too, so I'll not hold that against any one or thing. and I would not push this perspective, "estruscans; early romans are greek?" too hard. But the real issue (another term for "in my opinion") is whether the wikipedia list of statues should be articles already completed or a wish list of what should/could be? I favor the former, but not stridently. However the list cold quickly deteriorate into a thousand red links surrounding a smattering of blue. Carptrash (talk) 15:55, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering

[edit]

how best to intigrate statues such as these, The Hiker (Newman) and The Hiker (Kitson) and Spirit of the American Doughboy into this list? I suppose each statue is a unique work and should be listed in what ever state it occurs. Right? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 06:05, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

illustrations

[edit]

Can this list have some pictures? It looks rather dull like this. 84.106.26.81 (talk) 17:11, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Split by continent?

[edit]

The section for the United States seems big enough to have it's own list. We could divide the rest by continent. That way each other list will look unfinished and invite participation. In the current format it isn't obvious that China has only one entry. 84.106.26.81 (talk) 17:26, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Transform into Lists of statues?

[edit]

Move section content to List of statues in X, and link these lists? "most famous statues" is terribly relative.--Zoupan 20:56, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
