Plantation off-ramp

[edit]

1992 Plantation off-ramp demolished to be replaced by M80 Stepps by-pass

I don't know quite what is meant by this, Plantation and the M80 are on opposite sides of Glasgow.

This should be Provan off ramp --Stewart (talk | edits) 16:17, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ends at Greenock?

[edit]

I'm a Greenockian myself, so it's satisfying to me to see my town mentioned as the terminus of the most important road in Scotland. However, the article admits that the motorway actually ends a few miles east of Greenock, at Langbank. From then on, it's the A8, not the M8. Is this to be considered an inaccuracy worthy of editing, or just me nit-picking? Nach0king 22:51, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dates Contradict

[edit]

From the article:

"The Glasgow inner city section was constructed between 1968 and 1972, using a scheme outlined in the Bruce Report, which was published as the Second World War was closing, and which set out a series of initiatives to regenerate the city. The bulk of construction of this section was complete by 1980."

So we have "between 1968 and 1972" and "complete by 1980" ? Which is it. 1972 or 1980? I suspect there should be a sentance inbetween that has been missed out. Can anyone fill in which section was completed by 1980?

Well spotted. The Glasgow Inner Ring Road was complete (well, the sections that were built) by 1972, and the rest of the motorway was complete by 1980. Clarification has been added. Erath 16:08, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism section is POV

[edit]

This section needs sourced and reveranced better. The current statements like "The central Glasgow section is derided for its poor construction and ugly appearance, elevated above much of the surrounding area on a concrete viaduct," are very POV. While I generally share the viewpoint of the author, it's not suitable for WP's NPOV status. Can anyone provide a referance to backup these statements? Or else suggest an alternative wording? Rincewind42 09:18, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • How about something like "The central Glasgow section considered by the population as poorly constructed, and of an ugly appearance" but trying to find a source for at might be tricky... shee;dz 11.15, 13th February 2007 (GMT)

big horn on m8

can anyone tell me the purpose of the big horn on the m8(a8) just before harthill if traveling from edinburgh is it just a piece of art or does it have a purpose

I think it's supposed to be art, it plays sounds allegedly. Fraslet 23:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong terminology - "fast lane"

[edit]

"and including slip roads that enter and exit in the fast (right-hand) lane" is wrong - as per the highway code there are no "fast" or "slow" lanes on UK motorways - only overtaking lanes and you should always return to the left after overtaking. A technicality maybe, but surely the article needs to be correct? 161.12.7.4 14:06, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re name

[edit]

I propose to rename this article to M8 motorway (Great Britain) to fit in with other articles about roads on the GB. C. 22468 (talk) 14:23, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

M8 motorway (Scotland)M8 motorway (Great Britain) – All motorways in Great Britain use Mx motorway (Great Britain) so this article should be the same and there is no other M8 in Great Britain 03:09, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

  • Comment -- The road numbering system in GB uses numbers starting 1-7 for England and Wales and 8-9 for Scotland. The earlier comment (of 24 December) that all motorways have the disambiguator "Great Britian" is factually wrong. We also have M9 motorway (Scotland). Since the M8 and M9 are wholly in Scotland, there is no reason why they need be changed. I see no reason in principle why they all have to have the same disambiguator. Perhaps you wopuld like to go back to the days when we referred to "North Britain", which I understand that the Scots find insulting. Peterkingiron (talk) 11:27, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support since it is obiously the only motorway in Great Britain with this designation, so it is a nationwide number series. The fact that the motorway never leaves Scotland is beside the point when it comes to the article title, even if it should of course be mentioned in the text of the article. Paved with good intentions (talk) 13:39, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – It seems pointless to make this change. How does it help to make the disambiguator less specific here? Dicklyon (talk) 06:24, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • If there are no other motorway designated as M8 in England or Wales, the disambiguator is more specific than it has to be. A specific series of designations should preferably have the same disambiguator. To have the disambiguator "Scotland" makes you think it is chosen to distinguish it from an English, Welsh or Northern Irish M8, which is obviously not the case. Paved with good intentions (talk) 21:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – As per Peterkingiron the GB road numbering system already makes a distinction between England and Scotland (although the mainly Scottish numbers are actually 7-9 not 8-9). This is simply a solution seeking a non existent problem. The suggested move would successfully disambiguate the article but in a less clear way than at present. Andrewdpcotton (talk) 10:21, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, I don't see any advantage in using the less specific disambiguator. If there are any disambiguated motorways entirely in England, I would use "England" rather than "Great Britain" for them too.--Kotniski (talk) 12:05, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
