Essence of Emeril

Emeril Live is a television cooking program that aired on Food Network from October 6, 1997, to December 11, 2007, and then on Fine Living (now The Cooking Channel) from July 7, 2008, to December 14, 2010.

Description

[edit]

Hosted by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, Emeril Live featured many of the same elements as Emeril's other program, Essence of Emeril and often had a Creole theme. The program was taped in front of a live audience in New York City and featured music played by Doc Gibbs and the Emeril Live Band. In 2004, the program moved to Chelsea Market. Emeril Live began production in 1997, and won a CableACE Award for "Best Informational Show" later that year. The program featured a wide variety of cuisine from cajun to stir-fry and often featured well-known chefs as guests who cook alongside Emeril. Some of the celebrities that appeared on the program include Charlie Daniels, Patti LaBelle, Michael McDonald, Joe Perry, Sammy Hagar, Aretha Franklin, Patton Oswalt, and Jimmy Buffett.

On November 27, 2007, Food Network revealed it would halt production on the program on December 11, 2007.[2] On May 20, 2008, the Fine Living network announced that it would start airing Emeril Live, including never-before-seen episodes, beginning July 7, 2008.[3] The show ended on December 14, 2010.

Set design

[edit]

Emeril Live premiered on October 6, 1997, with its first set featuring a gray kitchen table, Viking Range appliances, and a black stage curtain separating the studio audience from the stage. This set was used until 1998. In 1998, the black stage curtain behind the audience was changed to a large letter "E," but the gray kitchen table and Viking Range appliances remained. The letter "E" was green from 1998 to 2002, and purple from 2002 to 2004. In 1999, the second "Emeril Live" set was introduced, which featured a brown kitchen table, and the Viking Range appliances remained. This set was used until 2004, when the show moved to Chelsea Market. The third and final "Emeril Live" set was used from 2004 until the show's ending on December 14, 2010. This set featured a brand new kitchen table, new Viking Range appliances, and colorful shapes and picture frames made out of food. Lagasse walks over to the picture frame. He then reveals the menu for the night. The menu is printed on the picture frame. The set for Emeril Live was changed when the show moved to Chelsea Market. Since then, there have been ongoing changes to the set. Emeril Lagasse made his entrance to the "Emeril Live" set from the top of the stairs in a spiral, and to the bottom in the kitchen when each episode began. From 2005 until the show's ending in 2010, Emeril Lagasse made his entrance wearing an apron and then went straight to the kitchen.
