Nickname

[edit]

Enry v Enery

The BBC spells the nickname as Enry which is a pretty good standard to follow.

Clay vs Cooper myth

[edit]

Someone apparently changed the article to fit the myth that Clay received minutes of time because of the torn glove. He did not. Clay got five or six seconds... yes, seconds... of time because of the torn glove, not minutes. No new gloves were "fetched" (British idiom, which leads me to believe an English Cooper fan was the one to change the article) and the two men went back to fighting. I'm changing the article back.-January 18, 2007

Cooper, and a lot of other people (My Father for one) still believe that the BBC has still not released the full footage of the actual time. I for one can't imagine my Father, a highly trained soldier, screaming at the TV "When is that cheating ****** Yank going to get of that ***** stool and fight?" over just 6 seconds, can you? Cheers, 'Arry Boy (talk) 18:50, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The BBC is a more credible source than your father, wikipedia to my knowledge does not use exaggerated tales told by family members. The gloves were never replaced, we know that for certain, and that was the basis of the myth. No offense.-11/21/08 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.184.202.208 (talk) 09:50, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ali's manager Angelo Dundee said he tore the glove to get a delay. The point is how long was the delay not whether the gloves were replaced. The BBc tapes are evidence that the delay was not as long as alleged, but contrary to what the article has been altered to, the BBC tapes are not totally conclusive there was not a delay as long as Henry Cooper and others remembered because the BBC tapes may not have been seamless live as it happened footage, but rather what got transmitted for a later broadcast. Hence the actual delay were NOT seamless live footage, and may have been edited out for the broadcast. A lot of stuff went on in that fight. The article formerly said that Ali and his manager afterwards accused Cooper of repeatedly hitting on the break, and that even Cooper's official biographer acknowledged that some of Cooper's work in the contest was "very near the knuckle". There is no question that Ali was helped and guided back to the corner by his manager/corner which was a violation of the rules. The manager also used smelling salts which was a serious violation of the rules in Britain as Angelo Dundee well knew. Moreover, Cooper was ahead on points when stopped on cuts, and he was never off his feet against Ali. All that was sourced and in line citation referenced, but has been removed from the article. One last thing Cooper after a dispute with his trainer Cooper followed a novel regieme that resulted in him being officially about 20lbs lighter than Ali by the official weigh in and Cooper said he was actually 7lbs lighter than even that (total of 27lb) lighter, and in fact so close to the light-heavy limit his manager surreptitiously added weight to the scale. The BBC commentator Carpenter was startled at the difference in size between Ali and Cooper as you can hear on the tape. According to Cooper Ali would probabally have been knocked unconscious had it not been for his armpit having snagged on the ropes preventing his head going back and hitting the canvas covered boards of those days. All this was in the article and well referenced with inline citations. I'm not going to the trouble putting all this back in; there is no protection as too many people like to whittle down articles and ledes and remove referenced content they dislike. More Ali fans than cooper ones on Wikipedia, so it goes.Overagainst (talk) 00:34, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cooper outside UK

[edit]

Just a quick question, does anyone have any idea of how popular/known Henry Cooper is outside of the UK? Just trying to satisfy my own curiosity really...Pitt the elder 17:41, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would say, that from the amount of Canadians, Australians and Kiwis I've spoken to, that he was and still is very popular, but they would of course, have to speak for themselves, just my experience of talking to boxing fans from the afore mentioned countries. Jefferson Davis fight

[edit]

I suspect the result of the 1966 Jefferson Davis fight is wrong as listed? As per the note, Cooper won in the first, he didn't lose in the sixth ...

And his career record goes a bit awry around here, although it seems to end up all right somehow

Henry Cooper is one of the most recognisable and well-known English boxers, so it's a pity that there isn't at least one photo of him in the article. A picture of the first Ali fight - his career highlight - would spark up the article no end.

Not sure the BBC Sports Personality of the Year deserves its own section.

It's a very decent little piece, although some details of Cooper's early years (how did he get into boxing? Surely there's a biography of the man?) and some more details, especially after he retired, would spruce it up. "More recently" - when? Who says?

With a bit of work, I can see this going forward for a GA, maybe even an FA status.
