Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore or IIMB) is a reputed business school and an Institute of National Importance located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Founded in 1973, it was the third IIM to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad,[3] thereby forming the elite Indian B-School trio colloquially known as 'ABC', or 'IIM A/B/C'. It is widely regarded as one of the best B-Schools in India and the larger Asia-Pacific region.

It was established by the Government of India (GoI) as an institute of excellence[4] for education, training, research, and consulting in the field of management, and allied areas of knowledge. The Indian government called on IIMB to assist and mentor the two newly established IIMs during their inception period - IIM Trichy in 2011,[5] and IIM Visakhapatnam in 2015.[6]

IIMB offers bachelor's, master's, PG diploma, PG certificate fellowship, and doctoral programmes in business administration, business analytics, digital business, entrepreneurship, management, public policy, administration, and corporate governance. The institute also offers Executive Education programmes of various durations, including custom-made ones on the request of corporates. The 'MBA' in general management is the flagship programme of the institute, and is offered in three forms - two year full-time, one-year executive, and two-year part-time executive (weekend).

History

[edit]

Foundation

[edit]

In 1972, a committee headed by Ravi J. Matthai, first director of IIM Ahmedabad and founding director of IRMA, noting the rising demand for graduates of the first two IIMs namely IIMC and IIMA, recommended the need to have two more IIMs. The new IIM at Bangalore was set up to cater exclusively to the needs of public sector enterprises[7] like PSUs/PSEs, utility corporations, etc. For the proposed institute, the Government of Karnataka offered 105 acres (42 ha) of land (free of cost), and a contribution of INR 3 million (~US$ 390,000 in 1972).

Ultimately, on the 27th of March, 1972, the 'IIMB Society' was officially registered in Bangalore under the Mysore Societies' Registration Act. The prominent Indian banker T.A. Pai, the Ex-Chairman[8] of Syndicate Bank and Life Insurance Corporation, accepted to be the first Chairperson of the IIMB Board of Governors, and N.S. Iyer Ramaswamy, the then director of NITIE Mumbai was appointed as the first Director of the institute. The institute was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on 28th of October 1973.

Early years

[edit]

The institute started operations in the campus of St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings rented on the Langford Road in the city. The first PG(Management) batch started in 1974, and the first FPM doctoral course started in 1976. The first convocation of the institute was held on 10th of July 1976 with a total of 48 graduating students.[9] The IIMB BoG approved the appointment of 'M/s Stein, Doshi, and Bhalla' as architects of the official independent campus in July 1976, and on 27th of November 1978, the 'Guddalipooja' (ground-breaking) ceremony of the new campus on Bannerghatta Road was performed. IIMB moved operations to its new (and current) campus in 1983.[10]

Growth

[edit]

IIMB charted a new direction in 1985. The PG courses were redesigned, student intakes increased, new courses launched, and faculty workloads modified. It partnered with EFMD for faculty development in 1988-89, and joined IMPM[11] Consortium in 1996. A Management Program for Technologists (MPT) was started in 1992. IIMB became the first B-School in India to have internet on campus (via ERNET) in December 1995, just four months after internet services were launched in India. In 1998, the GoI, in partnership with UNDP, selected IIMB to setup a 'Centre for Public Policy' (CPP) which ultimatley came up in 2000. The institute's start-up incubation centre, 'NSR Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning' (NSRCEL) came into existence in March 2002. As of 2024, IIMB was the only Indian B-School in the GNAM collaboration convened by the Yale SOM.[12]

[edit]

The official motto of the institute is "तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु" (pronounced as tejasvi nāvadhītamastu, per IAST transliteration), and was adopted in 1991-92. It is in Sanskrit language, and is an extract from the Shanti Mantra recited in Taittiriya Upanishad, Katha Upanishad, Mandukya Upanishad, and Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The motto translates to 'Let our study be enlightening'.[13]

The IIMB's official logo is a depiction of the top-half of a blazing sun with stylised rays prominently emanating from it. The text 'IIMB' is written in centre of sun, and the motto in Sanskrit below it. The image is in the style of a negative space picture with intense red colour in background. It was designed by the National Institute of Design, and has been in use since 1994.[14] The hue of the red colour used in the logo is also used as the official colour of IIMB for all practical purposes, often matched with white, grey, or black.

Campus

[edit]
Main entrance to IIM Bangalore

The IIMB campus, occupying an area of over 100 acres, is located directly on Bannerghatta Road in the southern part of Bangalore. It is accessible by private or public transport from anywhere in the city via bike, car, taxi, or bus. An 'IIMB' named metro station on the Namma Metro's Pink Line is planned to be launched with Phase-I in September 2025 (as per 2024-Q2 updates on the project). The campus is ~13 km from KSR City Junction, ~13 km from Cantt. railway station, and ~44 km from Kempegowda International Airport. IIMB is in the process of setting up its second campus ~20 km away near Jigani, in the city's periphery, in Anekal Taluka of the district.[15]

Architecture

[edit]

IIM Bangalore was designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize winning architect, and Padma Bhushan awardee Mr. B.V. Doshi, FRIBA. He had worked closely with the famous Swiss-French architect[16] Le Corbusier, and assisted the Estonian-American architect Louis Kahn in designing IIM Ahmedabad. He had also designed the renowned School of Architecture in Ahmedabad. His firm, 'Stein, Doshi, and Bhalla', was commissioned to design[17] the campus of newly established IIM Bangalore. The architecture of IIMB is inspired by the historic city of Fatehpur Sikri near Agra, and the Madurai temples in Tamil Nadu, along with the lush gardens of Bangalore, also known as the 'Garden City of India'. The 'T' magazine of the New York Times ranked IIMB campus 17 in their list of 'The 25 Most Significant Works of Post War Architecture'.[18]

Architectural elements include the high three-storied hallways, open quadrangles with ample area for greenery, sunlight streaming in through the pergolas, geometrical roofs, and a rough texture finish. The interplay of walls and openings, lights and shadows, and solids and voids changes the character of the main building during different times of the day, and during different seasons. The 54,000 sq mt IIMB complex is built in combination of granite stone-n-mortar masonry, and naked concrete; giving the campus a unique modern look which is easy on the eyes. The campus design began in 1977, and the construction of buildings was finished in 1983.[19] The greening effort for the campus started later in 1991. Thus, the campus took its envisioned final-form by the turn of the 21st century, and developed into a grey-n-green oasis of serenity.

Management Development Centre

[edit]

The MDC is a separate building that offers specific facilities to fulfill the corporate infrastructural needs of the institute. It offers rooms and halls for interviews, seminars, conferences, presentations, demonstrations, interactive sessions, etc. It also has accommodation for corporate-executives, a dining hall with kitchen, a gym, and open space for events.

Infrastructure

[edit]

Library: The library is spacious, well-stocked, and timely updated with journals. It is available 24x7, and provides access to Bloomberg Terminal, EBSCO, etc. The library also provides membership-based services to individuals, professionals, organizations, corporations, and academic institutions.[20] The alumni are encouraged to use the library facilities at a very nominal subscription charge.

Student housing: IIMB provides full-term furnished accommodation to all students of full-time programmes. There are hostels for individual students - ten old hostel blocks (A-J), six new hostel blocks (K-P), and an executive-student hostel block. There is also a married housing block available to doctoral students. All hostels have access to the mess, and other available facilities include an ATM, a pharmacy, and a cafeteria.

Sports Centre

Sports facilities: IIMB has playgrounds and facilities[21] for football (soccer), cricket, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and pool. The aesthetically designed[22] 'Sports Centre' has badminton courts, tennis courts, a gym, and a swimming pool.

Computing facilities: The campus has a 24x7 computer centre with printing facilities available to all. The institute also has a modern LAN network of 600+ PCs/workstations with intranet (file-sharing and messenger), and high-speed internet connectivity. The campus is also fully WiFi enabled.[23]

Programmes

[edit]

IIM Bangalore has been accredited by EQUIS since 2010.[24] The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 enacted by the GoI in December 2017 declared IIMs as Institutes of National Importance, thereby allowing IIMs to award degrees to their students instead of PG diplomas. Thereafter, in 2018, IIM Bangalore became the first IIM to award an MBA degree to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme in Management.[25]

IIM Bangalore offers five degree-granting programmes: a full-time doctoral programme (FPM), three full-time MBA programmes (EPGP, PGP, PGPBA), and a part-time MBA programme (PGPEM). The full-time programme in Public Policy (PGPPM) leads to a PG certificate.

In 2019, the Institute signed an MoU with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to train fellows in Public Policy and Management to work with District Administration under the Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship program as part of the World Bank funded SANKALP Scheme.[26] In 2021, this program was scaled up to the entire country involving 8 other IIMs with IIMB as the anchor institute.[27]

In 2024, IIM Bangalore forayed into undergraduate courses with online BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) programme in Digital Business and Entrepreneurship (BBA DBE).[28]

[edit]

The founding vision of IIMB emphasised equal focuse on imparting education, and conducting research in all functional areas of management and management studies. Therefore, IIMB established many 'Centres of Excellence', official research 'Initiatives', and research partnerships with other management colleges. A Research and Publication (R&P) Committee is in-charge of operational affairs.

IIMB's eleven 'Centres of Excellence' include: Centre for Capital Markets and Risk Management (CCMRM), Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship (CCGC), Centre for Management Communication (CenComm), Centre for Public Policy (CPP), Centre for Digital Public Goods (CDPG), Centre for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM), Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Mizuho India-Japan Study Centre (IJSC), Israel Centre, Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL), and Supply Chain Management Centre (SCMC). Among these, the 'CenComm' and 'CPP' are centres with full-time faculty.

The four contemporary research initiatives are: Behavioral Sciences Lab (BSL), Consumer Insights, Data Centre and Analytics Lab (DCAL), and Real Estate Research Initiative (RERI).[38] Partnerships with several B-Schools have been created to aid in research projects, namely: Ivey Business School, Singapore Management University, and University of British Columbia.

Journal: IIMB Management Review

[edit]

IIMB Management Review (IMR), launched in 1986, is the quarterly-published official journal of IIM Bangalore.[39] It invites manuscripts through online submissions, and has a special emphasis on papers that focus on emerging economies throughout the world. It is produced and hosted by Elsevier, and since 2022 IMR (ISSN 0970 3896) is a 'Gold' Open Access journal available at ScienceDirect.

IMR is a peer-reviewed journal, and follows a ‘double blind’ review process. All papers submitted to IMR go through a preliminary review at the editorial desk and those considered appropriate are sent to an Associate Editor. On the recommendation of the Associate Editor, the article may be rejected or assigned to two reviewers.

IMR Doctoral Conference

[edit]

The IMR Doctoral Conference (IMRDC) is a premier doctoral colloquium in management and allied disciplines. The first conference was held on the 27th of November, 2009, and is now organised annually by the IMRDC Secretariat which comprises of members from the IMR, and the institute's Research & Publication (R&P) Committee. It openly invites doctoral students in management research from across India and international colleges.

Entrepreneurship: NSRCEL

[edit]
NSR Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL)

In 1999-00, Mr. Nadathur S. Raghavan, the then Joint Managing Director of Infosys Technologies, donated a generous amount of money to IIMB to aid the activities of the then 'Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies'. Thus, the 'Nadathur Sarangapani Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning' (NSRCEL) was set up in 2002 to serve as the innovation and entrepreneurial hub of IIMB. It operates out of the 'NSR-GIV Centre' building in the IIMB campus, and acts as a not-for-profit incubator for new business ventures as well as social causes.[40] In 2017, NITI Aayog selected NSRCEL as a recipient of INR 100 million as scale-up and upgrade support over a period of two years.[41]

NSRCEL organises its flagship entrepreneurial conference SummitUp every year. It was started in 2021 as a virtual event of multiple-sessions over two days. It aims to bring together government officials, industry representatives, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, experts, and other ecosystem members.

IIMBx

[edit]

IIMBx is the digital learning initiative of IIM Bangalore founded on the philosophy of accessible high-quality education. The aim is to leverage technology to create a state-of-the-art repository of digital courseware in management for international learners. IIMBx's own platform is based on Open edX.

IIMB started offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in 2014 in partnership with edX – a not-for-profit online initiative of Harvard and MIT. IIMB was, in fact, the first B-School[42] in India to do so. MOOCs can be taken as individual courses, or bundled as programs, with renowned MicroMasters or IIMB Professional certification. Apart from edX, the courses were later also offered on IIMB's own aforementioned platform, IIMBx[43], and Government of India's SWAYAM. IIMB was appointed the National Coordinator[44] for management at SWAYAM by Govt. of India.

Career Development Services

[edit]

The Career Development Services unit, called CDS, is responsible for providing career starting and advancement services to the students of IIMB. They aid in the making of resumes, and their subsequent verification. They coordinate with firms and organisations, and help in conducting intake processes for internship positions and jobs. The Placement Committee (PlaceCom) works under the CDS, the latter being headed by a Chairperson.
