Ok. This page, and etic mean nothing to me. It reads like a dictionary entry in a technical manual. I consider myself reasonably intelligent, but if it sounds like greek to me, it probably sounds like greek to most people except those who already know the term to begin with. Can someone expand to make it understandable to the general reader? Rgamble.

I agree. I did not write the original entry -- but I looked at it and sw that it was wrong, and corrected it (I wasn't interested in writing a great entry, just in correcting basic misinformation). But Rgamble is right. I did try to explain things a bit more, although I am not sure if this is adequate. I also think the emic and etic articles should be merged, as the two terms are themselves only meaningful as members of the pair. Slrubenstein

I've redirected etic to here - it could go the other way round, of course, or there could be emic and etic or something similar, but in any case, I don't see the point of a separate page on each - it is not really possible to talk about one without reference to the other, as far as I can make out. --Camembert
