I would not say "hover" and "levitation" are synonyms. If I see a helicopter stationary in the air, I don't say "It's levitating". Gwimpey 23:36, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm.. good point. but you COULD and it wouldn't really be wrong.  :-) i don't know. i guess they are not exactly synonyms. do you think "hover" warrants its own article though?

Some definitions from the web:

  • Levitate:
    • To rise or cause to rise into the air and float in apparent defiance of gravity.
    • To make buoyant; to cause to float in the air; as, to levitate a table.
    • To rise, or tend to rise, as if lighter than the surrounding medium; to become buoyant; -- opposed to gravitate.
    • be suspended in the air [syn: hover]
    • be suspended in the air, as if in defiance of gravity.
  • Hover:
    • To remain floating, suspended, or fluttering in the air: gulls hovering over the waves.
    • The act or state of hovering: 'a helicopter in hover.'
    • To hang fluttering in the air, or on the wing; to remain in flight or floating about or over a place or object; to be suspended in the air above something.
    • 3: hand in the air; fly or be suspended above 4: be suspended in the air [syn: levitate]
