More cleanup

[edit]

I did some cleanup today, but don't have the time to check the bio--and page cites really are needed, IMHO.Jweaver28 (talk) 20:07, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another reference/book which may help or may cause confusion

[edit]

I was recently given a copy of a book "The White Queen of Okoyong (Mary Slessor)" by WP Livingstone, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1917. On the title page it says WP Livingstone is "Author of 'Mary Slessor of Calabar'" (almost certainly the book referred to in the references). It seems that WP Livingstone wrote two biographies of Slessor and both were published about the same time! I haven't read both in their entirety but it looks like "Mary Slessor..." was intended for an adult reader and "The White Queen..." was written for children.

The pdf of "Mary Slessor..." referenced in the article is of a "popular edition" (29th Edition(!) published in 1927). I think at some stage it has been edited, because it has no table-of-contents and starts, on page 1 with "Second Phase 1876-1888 Age 28-40". The printed book I have contains a chapter on Slessor's childhood, before she sets off for Africa. I don't think that it adds a great deal of substance to the article, but it may be of interest to someone. It is written is a simple, uncritical manner and contains a lot of anecdotes.
