Upfield railway station is a commuter railway station and the terminus of the Upfield line, part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the northern suburb of Campbellfield in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Upfield station is a ground-level premium station, featuring a single platform. It opened on 8 October 1889, with the current station provided in 1963. It initially closed on 13 July 1903 and 5 May 1956, it was then reopened on 5 March 1928 and 17 August 1959.[4]

Initially opened as North Campbellfield, the station was given its current name of Upfield on 17 August 1959.[4]

History

[edit]

The original station on the site opened when the railway from Coburg was extended to Somerton in 1889.[5] The current station was opened on 17 August 1959, especially to serve workers at the nearby Ford factory, with the line from Fawkner to Somerton being reopened and electrified as far as Upfield.[5][4] The name of the station comes from the open country in the area at the time of its 1959 opening.[6][7]

During 1963–1964, the present station building was constructed.[8] In 1965, flashing light signals were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, located at the up end of the station.[5]

There is a train stabling yard north of the station, which opened in 1997.[9] Also in that year, a signal panel was installed.[5] In 1998, boom barriers were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, as part of upgrade works along the Upfield line.[10]

During 2002–2003, the station was refurbished[11] and, in December 2007, Upfield was upgraded to a premium station.[12] In 2011, an extra stabling siding (Siding "A") was provided.[5]

Under the PTV Network Development Plan, released in 2013, the section of the line between Upfield and Roxburgh Park was to be reinstated, and would include a flyover across the North East standard gauge line. That would allow V/Line services to Seymour to operate via Upfield, and would facilitate the eventual electrification of the line to Wallan.[13]

On 30 June 2019, the Upfield signal panel was abolished, and control was transferred to Metrol.[14]
