"World U18 Championships" in medal record

[edit]

And Ivan Hlinka are different events. The World U118 Championship is the IIHF event. The World U18 Cup iis now the Ivan Hlinka Memorial and it's not an IIHF event. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.233.107.169 (talk) 18:13, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jean-Pierre Dumont

[edit]

I removed the last sentence of the article since J-P Dumont has *not* been re-signed by the Buffalo Sabres. GM Darcy Reiger has stated he's given Dumont an offer but he's not been re-signed by the Sabres (as much as I'd like him to). Neither Yahoo!, TSN or the Sabres' official web site documents a Dumont signing by Buffalo, so whomever posted that sentence please give a source before putting it back. -RomeW

French OR English wik biography?

[edit]

The main title should be 'Daniel Briere'. This is the English Wikipedia not the French. GoodDay 20:42, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

This nickname is a relatively recent one.[1]

After a Feb 6th, 2007 win over the Atlanta Thrashers, Buffalo Sabres announcer Rick Jeanerette called DB "Cookie Monster'. It was homage to the location of DB's goals---'top shelf where momma hides the cookies'.

I'll use this source. [2] --4.239.168.189 18:21, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Playing Career

[edit]

This section of Briere's entry is rather sparse; there's no mention of how he came to the Sabres, and I'm sure there is other information missing. I don't know a lot about Briere (just happened to come across this because I'm watching the Islanders/Flyers game), so maybe someone who knows more than I do could flesh this out a bit? Winnipeg Jets

[edit]

Has he ever actually played for the Winnipeg Jets or is this team just in the list as it was changed to the Phoenix Coyotes? If there is no answer I will remove the Jets from the list of teams he has played with. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghyslyn (talkcontribs) 01:48, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, he never played for the Jets. I nixed it. V-train (talk) 02:44, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He didn't play for the Jets, but he was drafted in June 1996. Was he officially drafted by the Jets or the Coyotes? rkehler3 (talk) 02:44, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The YouTube video titled "Chris Phillips Drafted by the Ottawa Senators June 22, 1996" clearly shows Phoenix 11th on the draft board approximately 2:40 into the video. He was officially drafted as a Coyote. --Parkfly3 (talk) 06:06, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Briere: Forever Young

[edit]

So, I yust saw a video on Youtube, and I can't help but wonder. Is Briere really that young? 24.87.56.142 (talk) 23:03, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Common name

[edit]

Danny Briere has slightly over 2 million more Google hits than Daniel Briere. And since the official website lists him as Danny, shouldn't this page be located at Danny Brière? --Izzygood (talk) 01:39, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

June 2013 - Agree with above.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdjd021 (talkcontribs) 05:35, 12 June 2013 (UTC) It seems that Danny's name is a huge issue on this page. I myself just tried moving it to "Danny Brière", and Wiki would not let me. Let me just say this... His public NHL name is Danny, just as Stefani Germanotta's public Hollywood name is Lady Gaga. Simple as that. Germanotta's page title is "Lady Gaga", just as Daniel Brière's page title should be "Danny Brière". It's not his "nick name". If you don't watch or follow Brière's career, you shouldn't be on this page. So whoever mentioned "nick names" is just clogging up space.[reply]

OFFICIAL scoresheets straight from the NHL website (Event Summaries, Faceoffs Reports, Time On-Ice Reports, Roster Reports, and Shot Reports - all the sheets that include players' first names) list him as either "DANNY BRIERE" or "BRIERE, DANNY". And again, let's not forget about how his name appears on his profile pages on flyers.nhl.com, nhl.com. hockey-reference.com, espn.com, sports.yahoo.com, and sports.yahoo.com/fantasy - all of those sites have it as "Danny" on not only his profile page, but also on the team roster list. #DannyNotDaniel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdjd021 (talkcontribs) 05:33, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An update: During an interview that aired on the Flyers broadcast prior to last night's Flyers/Canadiens game, Briere said he has gone back to Daniel because Danny is difficult to say in French (I have no idea if there is anything to that). It was also pointed out that he was known as Danny throughout his entire six seasons as a Flyer by his choice. --72.25.41.35 (talk) 08:58, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

[edit]

Please note that this request is not about changing the use of diacritics; it's about whether to use "Daniel" or "Danny". HeyMid (contribs) 15:27, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel BrièreDanny BrièreRelisted — and I'll be tempted to block the next person who mentions diacritics! Favonian (talk) 19:06, 16 August 2011 (UTC) It seems to me that he is commonly called Danny. HandsomeFella (talk) 15:07, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rubbish. There is no such compromise. Dolovis (talk) 03:56, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, there is. Check here. Anyway, this discussion is about "Daniel" or "Danny". HandsomeFella (talk) 08:12, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A quick google search shows more hits for Danny Briere. If he were known as Danny just in Philly then why does NHL.com and NHLPA.com list him as Danny Briere? Add to that list ESPN, CBS, Yahoo, hockey-reference, legends of hockey, etc. --Izzygood (talk) 23:17, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A number of the sources you list actually use Daniel. His Yahoo profile for example. The NHL.com lists him as such as they get the info from how the team lists him. NHLPA I believe just mirrors the NHL.com profile essentially. Now of course its only personal experience but I have heard none of the major broadcast networks call him Danny Briere. CBC, TSN and XM Radio all call him Daniel any time I have heard them mention him. And they are just as valid as print sources. -DJSasso (talk) 11:27, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
His Yahoo profile lists him as Danny Briere and that applies to the Canadian version of Yahoo sports as well (I thought that might be the problem but it wasn't). The sources I provided all say Danny so I don't know what you are seeing differently from me. -- It's the player that dictates what exactly he is called, not the team. For instance, Nikolay Zherdev requested that his name be changed from Nikolai to Nikolay prior to last season and his NHL.com profile was changed immediately. With regard to Briere, when he was originally signed by the Flyers he was listed as Daniel. A month later he was listed as Danny, probably at his request. -- Here is NBC referring to him as Danny Briere. That said, I'm sure Ed Olczyk has referred to him as Daniel and Danny interchangeably and that's probably the case with Canadian media. --Izzygood (talk) 18:07, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say its close enough that at worst they are both used extensively and interchangeably. If that is the case it should be defaulting to the actual name. My mistake on the yahoo...it was a case of google tricking me when I told it to only show me pages with Daniel and not Danny and it still showed me the profile. -DJSasso (talk) 18:10, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
