OK, I have written this article to encompass the pen trade in the quarter also, it is original material and all sources for the page content can be found on the links I have provided, and a link taken from the main brum article (some ancient project or other). Nibs

[edit]

The nib technology bit needs checking. Geeky pen sites - eg [1] and [2] - say Duracrome was the earlier steel-tipped nib. "Gold and jewel" were never nibs as such: the gold is the decorative and anti-corrosion plating on the non-writing bit of the nib, the jewel was part of the pen barrel trim. See also Fountain_pen (which mentions that in pen circles, "iridium" is a misnomer for "osmiridium") RayGirvan 15:16, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dip pen

[edit]

I have moved most of the pen info to the dip pen article, where it is more appropriate. Some basic info remains here, along with a link to the new location. Denni 18:49, 2005 Jun 11 (UTC)

Looks good. Nick Boulevard 11:22, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually on second thoughts, I love your history edit but please can we keep most of the pen history in this page, it took me ages to research all that and write, I know its not perfect but I created it with the intention of adding it to the jewellery quarter, it looks well intergrated on dip pen, looks even better on Jewellery quarter :) Nick Boulevard 23:38, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The problem is that it is not appropriate in an article on the Jewellery Quarter. It badly unbalances the article. The information has not disappeared, it's merely been moved to a place where it fits better. Denni 23:50, 2005 Jun 13 (UTC)
I get your point and to be honest I originally had an idea of creating an article called the pen quarter which seems to have been in the jewellery quarter but also on the outskirts as well which is the area just off colmore row (the old colmore estate I think), in this case I actually think that a new page is in order, that way a link could be added here and the pen quarter article could grow independently, considering the amount of info out there it could become quite an interesting article to compliment the jewellery quarter. Nick Boulevard 16:25, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually, "Pen Quarter" or "Birmingham Pen manufacture"? the pen quarter was as i said manily in the jewellery quarter and colmore estate area, however there were other factories and workshops across the city, the baskerville font was created in Brum as well. Nick Boulevard 16:30, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I think "Pen Quarter" is the better choice, if that is actually what it is (or was) called. Denni 04:34, 2005 Jun 15 (UTC)

WP:RM Jewellery Quarter → Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

[edit]
  • Oppose - why? What other articles on Jewllery Quarters are in need of articles right now that are as or more notable (I've never heard of this one, so...)? We don't disambiguate unless it is needed, after all. James F. (talk) 20:26, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I think you may find that Andy Mabbett (pigs) wishes to cause as much havoc to any article I ever write, hence his picking up on the few bits of copyright I foolishly added and then his willingness to change the title of the page after the entire content was removed, I have re-written it at Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham with another editor copy editing, I would rather keep it simply as jewellery quarter. Nick Boulevard 23:26, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Oppose The title should be what would be most logically searched for. All other things being equal, the shorter the better. Denni 23:52, 2005 Jun 13 (UTC)
  • Oppose Google shows it's by far the most significant use of the term. <"Jewellery Quarter">: 43,400 hits. <"Jewellery Quarter" -Birmingham>: 4,990 hits. RayGirvan 00:29, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Oppose from me, too. Until we need disambiguation, there's no point in doing it. The first sentence of the article makes it clear where the Jewellery Quarter is. --Brumburger 09:11, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Oppose. violet/riga (t) 18:50, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It was requested that this article be renamed but there was no consensus for it to be moved. violet/riga (t) 18:50, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Page tidy up ideas

[edit]

Much content regarding conservation, development and the local administration of the JQ is now very out of date.

There has been a substantial amount of development in the last 20 years which renders a lot of the detail of some of the speculative planning applications and developments from the 2005-2015 period out of date. I’m not sure how useful it will be to continue at this depth and chart all recent and new developments given the substantial growth in volume over the recent years.

Key modern JQ institutions and projects are not yet mentioned or given priority in this document, such as:

  • JQNF
  • JQ Development Trust and Townscape Heritage Project
  • Restoration of railings at the two cemeteries, Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries and related projects
  • Accommodations made in line with local transport policy such as the new cycle network, changes to vehicle access to the area especially through and after covid
  • The annual JQ Festival
  • Publications: JQ Life magazine, the Hockley Flyer
  • Birmingham Design Festival headquarters and the Birmingham Design Shop
  • The Anchor exchange
  • A burgeoning food, cafe and restaurant scene

There is also missing historical opportunity, such as connections with Washington Irving (Legend of Sleepy Hollow & Rip Van Winkle written in JQ), the Turner sketch and the parliamentary reform gatherings - amongst others. Also the importance of nationally significant and very old firms such as Deakin & Francis, Vaughton’s (automotive badges), Yard O’Led and Toye, Kenning & Spencer are omitted.

Openings of more recent museums such as the Pen Museum and the JW Evans site are missing.

These are notes simply to suggest a path of future edits. I may well start to tackle some of these omissions in time, but it seems a volume of former and hard-to-verify detail from the not too distant past maybe overwhelming more relevant, up to date information. Would be interested to know if others feel similarly or may assist.
